At Sonoran Learning Collective, we are focused on teaching students in the core subjects because we value and understand the importance of these, especially as students progress in grade level. We therefore follow a spiral approach to learning because we want to see students succeed through the end of their studies and have a firm academic foundation for their future.
We are also inspired by classical education; we want students to know how to learn and think, not what to think. We want to cultivate not just knowledge but wisdom.
"Classical Christian education is the cultivation of wisdom and virtue through meditation on the Good, the True, and the Beautiful. This is accomplished in two ways: first, through training in the liberal arts; and secondly, through a familiarity with the great books and the great thinkers of the Western tradition." ~Memoria Press
As noted by publisher and educator Christopher Perrin:
Festina Lente / Make Haste Slowly: Taking Time to Master Each Step
It is best to master each step rather than to rush through content; the quickest way forward is to ensure that you take the time needed to master each step of learning. To make haste slowly is to set a pace that is fitting for the time that is available and that ensures students master what you teach them. Because students deeply learn what is taught, they are able to proceed more quickly to what is next because they do not forget previous study.
Multum non Multa / Much Not Many: Going Deep not Wide
It is better to master a few things than to cursorily cover content that will be forgotten, or study fewer things but study them well; it is better to deeply understand a single book than to superficially read several books that will not be loved nor remembered; it is better to study deeply the truly best things available than to divide attention and comprehension among several good things.

Our story began with recognizing that education isn't a one-size-fits-all concept. Sonoran Learning Collective was founded by Arizona school choice advocate and homeschool mom, Marta MacBan. Marta's journey into education began during her daughter's kindergarten year at a district school. When classes moved online during the Spring of 2020, Marta realized her daughter needed a different model. This propelled her into homeschooling and then co-founding a hybrid school that met 1-2 days per week. Seeing students thrive in this model fueled Marta's passion for education. She soon joined a local school choice non-profit, speaking around the state in support of school options and meeting with dozens of families to help them find the best fit for their children. Marta saw a need for more options in the North Valley, especially for those families with students in the intermediate elementary and middle school grades who need more support in the core subjects. She believes all children have amazing potential and wants to offer a flexible but thorough program to cultivate the next generation.
