Our mission is to teach students how to think deeply, not just seek quick answers or rely on algorithms. We believe the ability to reason, question, and discern truth is what makes us uniquely human. Through our hybrid model, we partner with parents to provide a robust and rigorous education rooted in traditional learning, Christian values, and timeless academic disciplines.
In today’s digital world, we recognize the importance of hands-on, traditional learning methods. Our in-class programs don't rely on screens and instead emphasize the value of paper and pencil.
The “paper and pencil” approach helps improve retention, concentration, penmanship, and hand-eye coordination. Plus, it provides parents with an active role in their child’s learning, serving as an editor to guide improvements in writing and handwriting.
We want students to be proficient in both written and verbal communication so we encourage students to answer questions in complete sentences, reinforcing not just their academic skills but also their ability to express themselves clearly.
We are Biblically-based; all of our curriculum is grounded in a Christian worldview and Biblical historical perspective. Prayer is part of our morning assembly, as well as reading of Bible verses. All families are welcome to join our program, with the understanding that the curriculum supports a Biblical worldview and that our actions and words seek to reflect and instill Christ-like virtues.
We provide instruction in core subjects so students have confidence in learning and progressing to the next levels in each of those subjects. We want to help families to know exactly what and how their child is learning, to set long term goals, and achieve those goals. We are a part time school with full time commitment to education!
Our families are dedicated to and prioritize their child's education. We view parents as essential teaching partners so we communicate all classroom notes and assignments with parents. Parents should plan to participate in their child's education and have an active role in at-home instruction, spending 1-3 hours per day with their student on at-home days (depending on grade level and individual student needs).
At Sonoran Learning Collective, we not only take a traditional approach to academics but also to socialization. Growing amounts of research reflect the downsides and harmful side effects of screens and technology use among kids, especially those under the teen years. We strive to foster direct peer conversations and friendships among our students and reduce distractions. We value the depth and benefits of a close, in-person community and a play-based childhood.

Students attend classes on Mondays and Tuesdays. They are dropped off between 9:00am and 9:15am; classroom instruction begins at 9:30am. Our school days follow a traditional format where students receive subject- and grade-specific instruction from a teacher, in a classroom. Each day also includes time for recess, breaks, and lunch. Students are picked up at 3:30pm.
We follow a traditional school-year calendar, with classes beginning in August and ending in May. We observe seasonal and holiday breaks throughout the school year.
For our hybrid program, we have carefully selected a systematic curriculum plan so students can receive instruction in core subjects and have the steps necessary to build upon each subject as they progress in grade level. Our curriculum has been selected to be able to be used by any student, even if coming from a different academic background. We meet with students prior to enrollment to assess level placement and to set individualized goals for each student. Please click here to see our curriculum overview.
Unit tests will be given in some subjects so parents are attuned to where their student is academically and know what needs to be focused on at home. We will assess students quarterly in core subjects and provide feedback to both parents and students. We do not issue report cards but can assist parents in creating a gradebook and report card template to be used at home.
The amount of time spent on lessons at home depends on many factors, including family size, your student’s age and maturity, learning style and speed, and family dynamics. For at-home days, we suggest the following as a rough total estimate for the week:
2nd Grade: 1 to 3 hours
3rd Grade: 3 to to 5 hours
4th Grade: 4 to 5 hours
5th grade and up: 4 to 6 hours
In our Cycle of Responsibility, parents assume the pivotal role of “co-teacher.” During class days, our teachers introduce new concepts and provide a checklist for each subject that parents use at home with their student. In the role of teacher at home, parents should plan to spend time in each lesson with their student, giving additional instruction where needed. We encourage parents to actively participate in the curriculum by reading novels and using curriculum teacher manuals as a tool at home.
At this time, we do not have the staff, training, or resources to provide the level of support required for students with special educational needs, whether academic or social/behavioral, or to implement Individualized Education Plans (IEPs). However, we care deeply about helping each child find an environment where they can thrive. We are happy to partner with families to review their student's needs, explore the best placement options, connect them with resources for additional evaluations, and, when possible, guide them toward funding opportunities for specialized services.
